Empowering the Youth at Agay National High School
In a world where teenagers face increasing mental and social pressures, fostering a safe and supportive environment has never been more important. Recognizing this need, Jean Emerald Morado, alongside fellow facilitators, initiated "Usapang Barkadahan: Strengthening Peer Support and Mental Wellness"—a youth-led program at Agay National High School designed to promote mental well-being, open conversations, and meaningful friendships.
With students in Grades 7 to 9 participating, this initiative created an inclusive space where young minds could share experiences, discuss mental health challenges, and build stronger peer relationships. Through interactive discussions and engaging activities, participants were encouraged to embrace resilience, self-care, and empathy.
A Two-Session Journey Towards Growth
The program unfolded in two significant sessions:
🟢 Session 1: Understanding and Addressing Bullying (January 17, 2025)
🟢 Session 2: Building Bridges – How to Support Friends and Foster a Caring Environment (January 31, 2025)
This session emphasized the power of friendship and empathy in creating a supportive school environment. Students learned effective communication techniques, the importance of emotional support, and how to foster inclusivity within their peer groups.
Lessons Beyond the Classroom
For Jean Emerald Morado, leading the discussions was both a challenge and a rewarding experience. "I felt nervous and excited at the same time," she reflected. "Not only did the participants learn from us, but we also gained valuable insights from them."
The sessions underscored the significance of teamwork, time management, and the power of an encouraging environment. The positive responses from students and observers fueled plans for future improvements, including more engaging activities and better time allocation.
A Personal Mission for Change
Beyond her role as a facilitator, Jean Emerald Morado is a driven individual with a deep passion for learning and helping others. Raised in Balangbalang, Agusan del Norte, she has always embraced opportunities to grow—whether through sports, music, or leadership roles. A member of the YES-O Club, a participant in science fairs, and an active church volunteer, she understands the value of integrity, perseverance, and community.
Her ultimate dream? To become a doctor. Though the road ahead may be challenging, her experiences in peer education and youth advocacy have strengthened her resolve. "This ambition seemed blurry before, but now, it's clearer than ever. I’m ready to embrace every opportunity that leads me toward my dream," she says.
Moving Forward: A Future of Empathy and Support
"Usapang Barkadahan" is more than just a school activity—it’s a movement towards a more compassionate and mentally resilient generation. By empowering students to openly discuss mental health and build stronger friendships, this initiative is paving the way for a school environment where no one feels alone, unheard, or unsupported.
As the program continues to evolve, it serves as a beacon of hope for young individuals striving to make a difference—one conversation at a time.
