Beyond the Bruised Dawn: Marialyn's Fierce Devotion

 by Hannaraya Ebrado

The journey to a new life began when Ethan, a hardworking young man with dreams of a secure future, traveled to the bustling town of Santiago to find work. It was there, beneath the warm Santiago sun, that he crossed paths with Marialyn. She was a woman of quiet grace—kind, humble, and profoundly compassionate. What started as a simple, unassuming encounter quickly wove itself into a deep friendship, and like a flower unfurling in the spring, that friendship blossomed into a passionate, undeniable love. They exchanged vows, built a warm home together, and promised each other that their devotion would serve as an unbreakable anchor, no matter what challenges the tides of life might bring.

But as the years marched on, the weight of the world grew heavy, and a dark shadow began to creep over the brilliant light of their home. Ethan fell into the suffocating grip of alcohol addiction, and the poison slowly twisted the man Marialyn had fallen for into someone unrecognizable. The sweet romance of their early years was shattered whenever he stumbled home drunk, losing control of his anger and subjecting Marialyn to agonizing physical abuse.

Her heart, though fractured and as fragile as glass, was held together by an immense, sacrificial love. Night after night, her tears fell in the quiet dark as she endured the pain, clinging desperately to the hope that the gentle, loving man she had married would one day return to her. She swallowed her suffering because she carried the profound dream that their nine beautiful children would grow up in the warmth of both their parents.

Yet, the darkness only deepened. Ethan’s drinking worsened, stripping away the joyful laughter that once echoed through their halls and leaving behind a chilling silence and thick, heavy fear. Despite the countless chances Marialyn offered him, Ethan absolutely refused to change, and she was forced to realize that her endless sacrifices were no longer enough to save their family.

The breaking point arrived on one agonizing evening, in the wake of yet another violent incident. Marialyn looked into the wide, terrified eyes of her children, and a fierce, maternal courage ignited within her soul. Making the most heart-wrenching decision of her life, she packed their belongings and walked away from the home they had built.

She did not leave because her love for him had vanished; she left because she finally understood the deepest truth of the heart: true love should never demand that you live in fear. In walking away from the man who refused to heal, Marialyn performed her greatest act of bravery. By choosing to protect herself and her nine children, she found the profound peace and strength needed to build a vibrant, better life, proving forever that real love is rooted in the fertile soil of respect, safety, and responsibility.

The Melody of a Faithful Love

 by Gwen Stiffany Bukid

The late April breeze of 1971 carried the vibrant promise of celebration as Rosita, a dedicated student of the Candelaria Institute, returned to the lush, quiet province of Humilog. She and her sisters busied themselves sweeping away the dust to prepare their home for the upcoming barangay fiesta, entirely unaware that destiny was strolling down their street.

He appeared with a guitar slung casually over his shoulder—a young man named Rogelio. Upon hearing her cousin whisper of his rare musical talent, a curious Rosita invited him into the cool, welcoming shade of their living room.

"Could you please play a song for us?" she asked politely.

With a warm, gentle smile, Rogelio’s fingers danced across the strings, coaxing out the tender, sweeping melody of "Faithful Love". The notes floated through the house like a soft breeze, filling every corner with an unspoken warmth. In that single afternoon, Rosita found herself captivated not just by his skill, but by the profound passion woven into his music.

Their bond blossomed effortlessly as Rogelio became a frequent visitor. On a quiet walk, bathed in the golden light of the afternoon, he gathered the courage to bare his soul and ask for her hand in courtship. Rosita's heart fluttered, but her response carried a gentle ultimatum: "If you go back to school, I will say YES!". Fueled by a fierce, devoted love, Rogelio returned to his studies, keeping his promise and officially winning her heart. Soon, he was celebrated as the school's finest guitarist. Rosita, now in her second year of college while he was in his third year of high school, beamed with pride as she watched the man she loved pursue his dreams.

But their sunlit romance soon encountered a heavy, darkening storm. When Rosita missed her monthly period, her mother uncovered the truth: she was carrying a child. Heartbroken and desperate to protect the future they had worked so hard to provide, her disappointed parents stripped away her education. To sever the young lovers' tie, they exiled her to the distant city of Cagayan de Oro.

Isolated beneath an unfamiliar sky where she knew no one, Rosita plunged into a deep, echoing loneliness. The shadows of sadness grew so heavy she even considered ending her own life. Yet, a fierce maternal fire burned through the darkness, keeping her fighting for the life growing inside her. On February 20, 1974, through tears of pain and sheer wonder, she gave birth to twin boys.

Returning to Cabadbaran city, she found that distance and time had not dimmed Rogelio’s burning devotion. Through a trusted friend, he secretly sent milk and money to provide for his sons—funds he had poured his soul into winning through guitar competitions and talent fees. Embracing her new family, Rosita's mother named the boys Matthew and Arnold, drawing inspiration from their local priest.

Tragedy struck when Rosita's father passed away in 1975, but in the depths of that profound grief, Rogelio stood as a pillar of unwavering strength for her family. His tireless care and undeniable sincerity finally melted her mother's reservations.

On January 6, 1976, they stood together and exchanged vows, cementing a love that had weathered every storm. They built their forever home on the very soil they had first met, raising four children together. Their story proved that the melody of "Faithful Love" was not just a song they once shared, but the enduring, triumphant soundtrack of their lives.

Mist, Earth, and Unbroken Devotion

by Mc Stooner Larida

The morning mist clung gently to the sloped peaks of the mountain village, wrapping the dawn in a quiet, cool blanket. Inside the warm hearth of her family home, the rich, intoxicating aroma of dark black coffee filled the air. Rosalie sat with her parents, sipping the warm brew and sharing easy, tender laughter as the day softly woke around them.

Once their cups were drained, Rosalie accompanied her mother, Sherley, out into the cool, damp air to work the rice fields. With her feet planted in the mud and her hands carefully setting green shoots into the earth, the rhythm of morning labor was serene—until a shadow fell gently across her reflection in the water. A soft voice spoke, asking for her name. Rosalie looked up to find a stranger watching her with bright eyes.

"Rosalie," she replied softly.

"My name is Sofronio," he answered, his voice smooth against the mountain backdrop.

In that fleeting moment, something ignited within Rosalie. A sudden, intoxicating affection surged through her heart—a quiet storm of romance so profound she could not keep it hidden. Drawn together like currents in a river, Rosalie confessed the depth of her feelings, surrendering her heart and her virginity to him in the warmth of their intimacy.

Months blossomed into springtime, and soon a new life stirred within her. After nine months of anticipation, she brought a baby boy into the world. Sofronio looked upon his new child, bestowing upon him the name Mc Stroner Larida. But the fleeting warmth of romance shattered almost as quickly as it had bloomed. Sofronio harbored a secret: a life and a family already waited for him in another city. Without a backward glance, he turned away, leaving Rosalie stranded in the shadows of love's harsh reality.

Alone with a newborn child and burdened by heavy financial hardship, the delicate girl transformed into a fortress of strength. Though the days were demanding and the nights heavy with fatigue, Rosalie worked relentlessly, her devotion to her child outshining every cold mountain wind. She poured every ounce of her soul into providing for her son.

Through sheer resilience and unrelenting grace, Rosalie turned hardship into victory. Today, the mist still rolls over the quiet mountain village, but it now shelters a home filled with joy, triumph, and unwavering faith as Rosalie and her son live a happy life, bound together in gratitude and worship to God.
